Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend classes at Topatopa Sewing?

Anyone who wants to express themselves through the clothing they make!

  • Age - All ages are welcome! If you’re under twelve, please attend with a parent.

  • Gender - The patterns in my classes come from all over the gender spectrum. Because sewing is a creative endeavor, there’s always room for adaptation and personal expression.

  • Sizes - I use patterns that have an inclusive size range. One of the things I love about sewing is that we get to make clothes that fit our bodies. Learning your personal fit adjustments is part of the journey.

  • Skill level - If you’ve used a sewing machine for other craft work, then my classes will be right for you. Projects vary in difficulty; each class description will say more about what prior experience will be helpful. Send me a note if you have questions about your skill level.

  • Accessibility considerations - The Studio is on a single level with no stairs. Class sizes will not exceed four people, so I can easily address individual needs and concerns. Please get in touch if you have questions about accessibility.

Where is Topatopa Sewing Studio located?

Topatopa Sewing Studio is a home-based studio located in the beautiful inland valley of Ojai, California. Ojai is 1.5 hours from Los Angeles and 45 minutes from Santa Barbara.

What equipment is at the Studio?

We have several sewing machines, an iron, cutting tables (though no rotary mats - we use scissors), and plenty of sunshine and light.

Should I bring my own sewing machine?

Bring your own, if possible! The Studio has several sewing machines available, but learning to sew is also about learning the ins and outs of your own machine.

What supplies do I need?

I provide specific supply lists for each class, but most classes require a basic sewing kit: fabric, thread, scissors, marking tools, tape measure, and pins.

Where should I purchase my supplies?

Learning how to source and purchase quality fabric is a core (and fun!) element of a sewing education. Unfortunately, independent brick and mortar fabric stores are few and far between. For each class, I will send a list of online fabric and vendor recommendations.

Is there parking at Topatopa Sewing Studio?

Yes!

How do I sign up and pay for classes?

Sign up for classes using the forms linked on this page. I will follow up with you for payment, which can be made via Venmo, PayPal, check, or cash.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please get in touch as soon as you know you need to cancel! For up to five days prior to a group class, a refund will be issued in the form of class credit. If you must cancel less than five days in advance, a class credit refund will only be issued if I am able to fill your spot with another participant.
